Germany's three intelligence agencies plan to use Google Distributed Cloud to exchange classified documents over a network with no direct internet link, NDR and WDR reported Monday, Oct. 26.

The broadcasters described ND-Cloud as a protected IT environment built around an air-gapped deployment of Google Distributed Cloud.

The intended users are MAD, which handles military intelligence; BfV, which covers domestic intelligence; and BND, which handles foreign intelligence. NDR and WDR cited sources who said storage would be confined to Germany and Google would be unable to view the contents.

Addressing concerns over a U.S.-based provider, the BfV told the broadcasters that it continues to prioritize European options for resilience. It also said modern technology platforms are needed for the agency's operations and innovation.
