Israel is set to gain a rotating seat on the UN Security Council in 2019, however, Arab league has confirmed that they don’t want to see that happening. During a joint press conference with Ahmed Al-Qattan, state minister for African affairs, Arab League Chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that it is working diplomatically to prevent that from happening.
The relations between Israel and the Arab league worsened after President Trump chose to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. After the decision, Arab league held a meeting in Istanbul, led by Turkey to determine the course of action to counter Trump’s decision.
With enough support, the Arab league can actually prevent Israel from gaining the Security Council seat as winning a Security Council seat requires a two-thirds majority in the 193-nation General Assembly. Candidates are proposed by the five regional groups but election to the council is done by the full assembly.
