The United States has developed a taste for Iranian carpets and according to Iran’s National Carpet center the United States is still the top export destination of Iranian carpets, despite the hostility towards Iran in the United States and despite the sanctions imposed.
According to Fereshteh Dastpak, the head of the Iranian national carpet center, Iran earned $126 million by exporting carpets to the United States, which is 27.9 percent of total carpet exports of Iran. She added that in the four months to July 22nd of this year, Iran exported 792 tons of carpets to the United States earning $38 million, which is significantly higher than $21 million exported during the same period last year.
Iran is the world’s biggest exporter of carpets exporting to 80 countries. Germany is the second biggest importer with 13.6 percent share of total carpet exports of Iran, followed by the Lebanon (7.1 percent), UK (5.5 percent), and Japan (5 percent).
The carpet industry is now bracing for re-imposition of sanctions by the United States, which had a devastating impact on Iran’s carpet exports in 2011.
