Global Geopolitical Series: EU says JCPoA to act as basis for future agreements

The European Union has once again reaffirmed its commitment to the Iran nuclear agreement or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) on Monday despite U.S. exit last week and President Donald Trump’s promise to impose harshest of sanctions on Iran. The support for JCPoA was voiced this time by EU foreign affairs spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic, during her conference with reporters in Brussels. She said that this deal was the fruit of 12 years of diplomatic work and the deal is still on despite U.S. exit as Iran continues to abide by the agreement and the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) has certified Iran’s compliance with the agreement.

While canceling the deal, Trump said that even though Iran would reject making a fresh agreement that would include U.S. concerns, Tehran would ultimately come to the negotiating table. Even if that is the case, according to EU spokeswoman, the current deal (JCPoA) would continue to work as a basis for future negotiations.
