French President Emmanuel Macron once again pushed one of his top agenda, which is to build European Joint military force calling it a necessity of the current time as the European Union and the United States are drifting apart on global policies while speaking to an audience of some 250 diplomats, lawmakers, and international relations experts. The Trump administration’s demand to clear past dues to NATO by adding billions of euro to the budget added to Europe's pain.
Relaunching his diplomatic agenda after the summer break, the president said he would put forward new proposals in the coming months for the EU to boost defense cooperation, as well as talks with Russia on their security relationship, as it is seen by many Eastern European nations who broke free from the Soviet Union as their main foe.
However, many skeptics such as European right-wing parties see the joint military force as a future weapon against national democracies and right-wing ideologies. Their suspicion may not be that dire as President Macron declared, “France wants a Europe which protects, even as extremism has grown stronger and nationalism has awoken”.
While all know of President Macron’s support for a more integrated European Union, his view of people with nationalistic ideas and belief as threats are surely concerning for future democracy within Europe. Recent ‘bodyguard’ scandal involving the President, incites more fear of his policies towards a more integrated Europe. His swipe towards populist leaders in Hungary, who he described as Xenophobes adds to the concern.
