President Vladimir Putin of Russia would meet the U.S. President Donald Trump, right after the FIFA world cup in Helsinki, Finland. This will be the third meeting between the two. Previous two meetings were held at the sidelines of other meetings like the G-20 in Germany last year and this is the first time the two leaders would travel to a neutral place to meet each other. Meetings could neither be held at the White house and nor at Kremlin as the relation between the two countries have remained significantly deteriorated. The United States has imposed sanctions on Russia since it annexed Crimea in response to North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) advance in Ukraine to include it. The United States has also closed several of Russian embassies in the United States and expelled diplomats in response to Russia’s alleged interference in the U.S. election and alleged poisoning of former agent and double spy Sergei Skripal in the United Kingdom using banned nerve agent Novichok.
But neither those nor Syria likely to be the Key challenge in Trump-Putin get together; It will be Iran, Iran, and Iran! While during President Obama years, it seemed that Syria is the key contentious issue between the two in the Middle East; the development in Syria strongly suggests that it is not on the top agenda. An agreement on Syria was already been reached during the first two meetings between the two leaders. The United States has reduced its military adventures under Trump’s watch and scrapped many of the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) covered program of supplying arms to rebels in Syria. As the United States agreed to loosen its grip to some extent; Syrian and Russian forces have advanced all across Syria. Even Turkey could get the Trump administration to reduce support for Kurdish militia in Syria, near Turkey’s borders.
But don’t expect him to drop one of his campaign agenda, where he promised to counter Iranian aggression when he is keeping most of them.
The United States has moved out of the Iran nuclear agreement (JCPoA), of which Russia has been a partner and will re-impose sanctions and other harsh measures to bring Iran to the negotiating table and curb its alleged military and militia adventures in the Middle East. President Trump also desires a grand peace agreement in the Middle East, where a peace agreement could be forged between Israelis and Palestinians with Jerusalem being the capital of Israel. Iran remains one of the key hindrances to such an agreement, especially with its war rhetoric towards Israel. The U.S. would also like to end Iranian presence on Syrian soil; so would Israel. To press upon this, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would travel to Moscow, just five days before the get-together meeting. Earlier this week, Russian foreign ministry said that zero Iranian presence in Syrian soil unlikely.
To tame Iran, the U.S. needs Russia, whereas Russia wouldn’t want the relationship with the Iranians to deteriorate since Mr. Putin believes in building long-term friendship and rejects the U.S. style, which he describes as the vassal diplomacy. However, Mr. Trump has many aces; one of them being U.S. cooperation over Syria.
