Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russia President Vladimir Putin seem to have reached an agreement to keep both Iran and Hezbollah away from the Syrian border close to Israel as Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov announced that Syrian government troops should be the only ones present on the country’s southern border along Israel. However, Mr. Lavrov added, “Of course, all non-Syrian forces should be withdrawn on a reciprocal basis…..This should be a two-way process. The situation, when only representatives of the Syrian armed forces will be deployed on the Syrian side of the border with Israel, should become the outcome of such work.”
According to reports, Lavrov’s comments came after direct negotiations between Netanyahu and Putin, where Netanyahu stressed that his country takes the Iranian threat seriously and will not hesitate to bombard Assad’s army and Assad’s palace if he fails to prevent Iranian troops operating from Syria along the Israeli border. Both Russia and Iran are allied to Syrian President Bashar al Assad.
As per the agreement, Israel will not intervene to prevent the deployment of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s troops to the southern border and the Golan Heights, effectively reasserting Assad’s control there, and Moscow will make sure that these troops do not include Iranian or Hezbollah forces. The agreement also reportedly includes the possibility of considering reviving the disengagement agreement between Syria and Israel from 1974, allowing for UN troops to monitor the demilitarized zone between the two countries.
