Global Geopolitical Series: Jordan calls on Arab countries to support UNRWA as U.S. cuts fund

United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) is making extra effort to fund the UN body after the U.S. President Donald Trump declared that he has asked the state department to move as much $200 million in aid to UNRWA to other areas benefiting the U.S. economy citing policy differences. To spearhead the body’s fundraising effort, the agency’s head Pierre Krahenbuhl met with Jordanian foreign minister Ayman Safadi in Amman on Thursday.

After the meeting, in a joint press conference, the Jordanian foreign minister said that Jordan will lead the campaign of fundraising for the UNRWA.  He added that an Arab league meeting would be called on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next month, where he would pitch to raise funds for the organization.

The U.S. move was to punish the leaders of the Palestinian Authority (PA), which has refused so far to sit down with the United States in negotiating a peace agreement since President Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

It is not clear at this point if Jordan would truly be able to raise enough funds to mitigate the impact of U.S. exit as its own economy receives monetary support from Saudi Arabia in billions of dollars, which is a close ally of the United States, where the Saudi Kingdom remains supportive of President Trump’s ideas of bringing peace between Israelis and Palestinians and peace in broader Middle East. In June, Saudi Arabia and two other Gulf states pledged $2.5 billion to help Jordanian economy.
