Google Cloud plans to preview Agent Compute Engine for customers in the coming months, providing businesses with isolated computing for custom AI agents that execute code and handle multi-step work.

Google Cloud announced the managed service Thursday, Oct. 22, and said its Gemini work agent already runs on it internally. The company has not given a firm preview date or pricing.

It is aimed at custom agents that execute code, interact with browsers and use tools. A hardware boundary encloses each microVM, which gets a dedicated guest kernel and root privileges. The design incorporates Google Cloud’s Titanium infrastructure processing unit; service credentials remain outside the microVM.

When an agent’s work pauses, the service can suspend its idle microVM and later restore it from a checkpoint; copy-on-write supports memory sharing.

Google Cloud also introduced Agent Substrate, an open-source runtime for Google Kubernetes Engine. That runtime is distinct from the managed service planned for customer preview.
