Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) officials met in Riyadh on Oct. 19 to discuss closer military coordination, with the council’s notice describing an agenda centered on operations and training.

The GCC said its Armed Forces Operations and Training Committee convened the extraordinary meeting at the General Secretariat. A representative of the Unified Military Command attended, according to the council.

The meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation among the six member states’ armed forces. The notice announced no agreement or decision and gave no timetable for further steps.

In a separate Oct. 18 communiqué, the GCC’s Ministerial Council condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and called for enforcement of U.N. arms restrictions on the group. The notice about the military meeting did not say whether those attacks were discussed.

The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
