Rolls-Royce SMR and Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N) said their planned small modular reactor (SMR) project on Ynys Môn attracted more than 400 suppliers to a two-day meeting as they seek UK-based firms.
Business Wales listed the “Delivering Together” event for Oct. 22-23 at Coleg Menai’s Llangefni campus. The project partners said attendees came from North Wales, elsewhere in the UK and the international nuclear industry. Sessions paired supplier prospects with potential buyers and gave smaller firms advice on entering Gwyndod’s procurement process.
The partners aim for 70% of Gwyndod’s content to come through UK-based companies. Their announcement forecasts that more than 300 apprentices will receive support during construction and says opportunities will be pursued locally where possible.
Rolls-Royce SMR launched a wider supplier program Sept. 16, giving UK businesses a chance to bid on up to £1.4 billion in contracts during the following year. The company presents the effort as a way to build the UK supply chain and support export opportunities. The figure describes contracts firms could bid for, not awards announced at the conference.
Minister for Energy Michael Shanks said the planned station would deliver “clean, homegrown nuclear power for the whole of Britain.” Great British Energy – Nuclear selected Wylfa for its first SMR project in November 2025 and later announced the name Gwyndod Power Station, chosen through a community process.
GBE-N said an April contract with Rolls-Royce SMR started the design phase, covering adaptation to the site, engagement with regulators and planning toward a future final investment decision. The Environment Agency (EA) says the Rolls-Royce SMR design has reached Step 3 of the Generic Design Assessment, where regulators are conducting a detailed review.
The EA says factory modularization is used in oil, gas and renewables, while applying it at this scale to a UK nuclear station is new. Public and stakeholder consultation on the reactor design is scheduled to start in February 2027, the agency says.
