Howard J. Federoff, MD, PhD, vice chancellor, health affairs and CEO, UCI Health System at the University of California, Irvine, was named chair of the AAHC Board of Directors of the Association of Academic Health Centers (AAHC) at its annual meeting held October 12-13 in Boston. An internist and neuroscientist, Dr. Federoff is nationally renowned for his clinical and research work in neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
“I greatly look forward to working with Dr. Federoff in his role as chair of the AAHC Board,” said Dr. Steven A. Wartman, AAHC president and CEO. “Dr. Federoff has brought exceptional academic health center leadership skills and knowledge to the Association as a member of the Board of Directors, and he is highly regarded for his work as both a healthcare provider and biomedical researcher. His vision and insights will add greatly in helping to lead our organization and inform all academic health centers as they strive to meet the challenges and opportunities of our time.”
As head of UCI’s health system, Dr. Federoff guides the strategic growth of the university’s academic clinical enterprise, including UC Irvine Medical Center, the H.H. Chao Comprehensive Digestive Disease Center, and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center in Orange, as well as numerous ambulatory primary and specialty care centers serving a region of nearly four million people. Prior to coming to UCI, Dr. Federoff served as executive vice president for health sciences and executive dean of the School of Medicine at Georgetown University.
Sam Hawgood, MBBS, chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), was elected to the position of chair-elect of the AAHC board. Dr. Hawgood is internationally renowned for his work in neonatology research, and also holds the position of Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Distinguished Professor at UCSF. Prior to his current position, Dr. Hawgood was dean of the UCSF School of Medicine and vice chancellor for medical affairs from 2009-2014.
Newly elected to the board for three-year terms are: Julie Ann Freischlag, MD, chief executive officer, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center; Larry R. Kaiser, MD, FACS, senior executive vice president for the health sciences, president & CEO, Temple University Health System, and Lewis Katz dean, School of Medicine, Temple University; and Richard Shannon, MD, executive vice president, health affairs, University of Virginia.
Newly elected to the board for one-year terms are: Deborah German, MD, vice president for medical affairs and dean of the UCF College of Medicine, University of Central Florida; and David Perlmutter, MD, executive vice chancellor and dean, School of Medicine, Washington University.
