Independent South Korean politician Han Dong-hoon argued that Seoul must prepare for a North Korean attack, using a fictional video-game invasion to challenge President Lee Jae-myung’s security approach, NDTV reported Oct. 27.
Han criticized what he described as Lee’s characterization of North Korea’s nuclear weapons as a “last line of defence.” He urged the president to plan for a military crisis rather than rely on the other side’s goodwill, according to NDTV.
Han made the appeal on Oct. 23, asking Lee to play a Call of Duty game depicting a North Korean assault on South Korea. He acknowledged the storyline was fictional and cited the 1950 invasion to argue that the military threat should not be dismissed.
Han also addressed concern that the game might inflame hostility toward North Korea, saying attention should focus on the security issue raised by its scenario. He urged Lee to try it as an illustration of how inadequate preparedness could intensify a crisis, NDTV reported. “Security is not ‘hope’ but ‘preparation,’” Han said in the account.
