Hot Headline, Cooler Core? September CPI Puts Markets on Alert

On Wednesday, October 14, at 8:30 a.m., the U.S. September CPI numbers is scheduled. The last inflation report before the Federal Reserve's October 28 meeting, ET (5:30 p.m. IST). While core CPI is expected to drop to 0.2% monthly and 2.4–2.5% yearly, markets project headline inflation to reach 0.6% month over month and 3.6–3.7% year over year.

That split could be a result of rising energy prices, notably gasoline, instead of a general increase in basic inflation. Energy prices increased 2.1% in August, but gasoline made up more than a third of the monthly CPI increase. Investors will also examine housing and services for indications of whether underlying inflation keeps slowing.

A lower-than-expected core inflation number might boost risk assets like stocks and crypto by pushing down Treasury yields and the dollar. An in-line outcome could cause investors to concentrate on the specifics and the Fed's view of disinflation, whereas a hotter core print might drive yields and the dollar higher and weigh on markets.
