House Speaker Mike Johnson will not seek a leadership role in the next Congress, leaving Republicans to choose new leaders after Democrats captured the House in the Nov. 3 midterm elections, The Independent reported.
In a Nov. 4 letter to Republican colleagues, Johnson cited the demands of the job on his family. He wrote, “I will not be a candidate for a leadership position in the 120th Congress.” The letter does not name the minority leader post specifically.
The Independent, citing two people familiar with Johnson’s decision, reported that he would not seek support to become minority leader. The outlet also reported he is expected to keep his House seat. EconoTimes previously covered Johnson’s decision not to seek a House GOP leadership post.
House Republicans are scheduled to elect their leaders Nov. 10, Axios reported. The 120th Congress is scheduled to convene Jan. 3, 2027, when the House is expected to elect a speaker, The Independent reported.
