The Indian Air Force (IAF) has reported an IL-76MD landing at 13,629 feet in Nyoma, eastern Ladakh, and cast the flight as a milestone for India's ability to move forces by air.

The service's Nov. 7 post called the altitude a record for the IL-76MD. It did not cite an outside body that certifies aviation records.

A Ministry of Defence release lists Nyoma (Mudh DZ) at 13,700 feet. A government update from the Border Roads Organisation describes a 2.7-kilometer runway and places the airbase near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

The Indian Express tied the project to India's infrastructure push following the 2020 military standoff with China and reported a cost of ₹218 crore. The Indian Express and Hindustan Times said the upgraded airbase opened in November 2025, following a C-130J arrival by then IAF chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh.

High altitude poses challenges for heavy aircraft. NDTV reported that thinner air reduces lift and engine performance. The Indian Express said the airbase would help the Air Force move personnel and equipment into eastern Ladakh.
