Democratic gains in Tuesday’s U.S. midterms, including an Indiana upset in a district President Donald Trump won by 17 points in 2024, put the party on course for House control and expanded oversight power, CNN and CNBC projected.

Democratic candidate J.D. Ford defeated Republican Rep. Victoria Spartz. A House majority would give Democrats more room to block Trump’s legislative proposals and open committee investigations into his administration. AFP said possible subjects include investigations related to the Iran war, mass deportations and corruption allegations. EconoTimes previously reported on Democrats’ planned oversight priorities.

North Carolina produced another Democratic House pickup. In Florida, results suggested the new district map might fall short of Republican hopes for additional seats, AFP reported.

Media projections cited by AFP showed Democratic Senate candidate Annie Andrews defeating Darline Graham in South Carolina. The last time a Democrat won a Senate race in South Carolina was in 1998.

AFP linked Republican losses to frustration over household expenses and tariffs, as well as fuel costs that rose during the Iran war. Los Angeles voter Taylor Cook, 24, told AFP, “Rent, groceries, utility bills, and property taxes keep climbing.”

AFP reported that Trump made a television appearance Tuesday to defend his tariff policy, immigration crackdown and military campaign against Iran. In a podcast released Monday, Trump said, “I veto everything,” before acknowledging he might eventually negotiate with Democrats.
