JAKARTA, Oct. 20 — Indonesia deployed 9,505 security personnel across Jakarta on Tuesday as students and environmental activists protested on the second anniversary of President Prabowo Subianto’s inauguration. The Indonesian National Police said the force included 7,660 police officers and 1,540 soldiers, alongside Jakarta administration staff and internal security guards.

Student demonstrators at Tugu Tani called for forest and land fires to be declared a national disaster. Fathimah Azzahra, vice chair of the University of Indonesia student executive board, set out further demands on economic inequality, civic space, corruption and education costs, according to reporters who covered her remarks at the protest.

Greenpeace Indonesia said activists unfurled two banners at Jakarta’s Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, linking the climate crisis to living costs. Police said six activists were evacuated from the monument and one received medical attention.

The protests come as SMRC reports that satisfaction with Prabowo’s performance fell to 44.5% in its Oct. 1–10 national survey, from 81.2% in November 2025. A separate Poltracking Indonesia survey found 55.3% satisfaction with the broader Prabowo–Gibran government. The polls asked about different subjects and should not be read as directly comparable approval ratings.
