Indonesian police said they seized 1.16 tonnes of ketamine from a tanker in the Strait of Malacca on Oct. 20 after tracking it since August, prompted by information that raised suspicions.

National Police Chief Suyudi Ario Seto said the vessel flew the Mongolian flag and was headed for Port Klang, Malaysia. A joint police and Customs team intercepted it, and authorities later took it to Belawan Port for inspection.

Officers found the ketamine in 58 sacks and arrested eight crew members, Seto said. Seven were Indonesians; one was Taiwanese.

Seto announced the seizure at an Oct. 23 briefing in Medan and valued the shipment at 3.48 trillion rupiah. EconoTimes previously detailed the seizure and crew arrests, including Seto’s account that a company based in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, owned the tanker.
