Bank Indonesia’s rupiah reference rate was Rp18,050 per U.S. dollar on Oct. 19 as MSCI’s proposed Indonesia index change raised concern that investors could cut exposure, OCBC said.

The Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (JISDOR) put the dollar at Rp17,948 on Oct. 15 and Rp18,052 on Oct. 16 before the rate eased slightly on Oct. 19. A rising dollar rate means the rupiah buys fewer dollars. OCBC FX strategist Christopher Wong said investors reducing Indonesian holdings before a final MSCI decision posed a near-term risk.

MSCI opened a consultation on Oct. 15 on moving its Indonesia indexes from emerging-market to standalone status. Its month-end data show Indonesia’s share of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index declined from 1.16% on Dec. 31, 2025, to 0.43% on Sept. 30, 2026. The number of Indonesian constituents also fell, from 18 to nine.

The index provider cited opaque shareholding structures and suspected coordinated trading as concerns. It said market participants had not seen consistent results from reforms announced by Indonesian authorities. The Indonesia Financial Services Authority, known as OJK, said Oct. 16 it would continue reform and enforcement efforts and engage with MSCI and institutional investors.

OCBC said adopting the proposal would eventually bring benchmark-related equity selling. Wong’s immediate concern is a broader pullback by investors while the review is pending; he said a prolonged retreat in portfolio flows could also weigh on local bonds and the rupiah. MSCI has said it could reconsider if the consultation shows material improvements in market governance and functioning.

Bank Indonesia held its BI-Rate at 5.75% at its Sept. 22-23 meeting and is scheduled to announce its next policy decision in Jakarta on Oct. 21. MSCI’s feedback period closes April 30, 2027, with a decision due by June 30, 2027.
