Iran is coming under intensifying economic and military pressure as the United States strengthens its forces in the Middle East while regional oil exports recover toward pre-war levels, according to Bloomberg.
The Trump administration is deploying the USS Theodore Roosevelt along with roughly 10,000 additional sailors and Marines to the region. The deployment could temporarily give Washington three carrier strike groups in the Middle East, although one of the existing carriers may eventually leave.
Iran’s economy is simultaneously facing severe strain. Inflation is nearing 90%, while the Iranian rial has fallen about 25% against the U.S. dollar over the past two months and nearly 50% this year.
A U.S. blockade has also significantly disrupted Iranian crude oil exports. Preliminary estimates indicated Iran loaded no crude onto tankers during September, although some Chinese refiners have continued receiving Iranian supplies held in floating storage.
Tehran has attempted to shift more trade through land crossings and the Caspian Sea, but those alternatives lack sufficient capacity to replace shipments traditionally moving through the Persian Gulf.
Meanwhile, Middle East oil exports are recovering despite continued tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia’s crude exports rose to roughly 6.1 million barrels per day in September from 3.4 million in August. JPMorgan estimated regional crude shipments had rebounded to 17.5 million barrels per day, or about 98% of pre-war levels.
Diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remain stalled. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has privately suggested restoring international nuclear inspectors’ access to damaged facilities in exchange for sanctions relief, according to diplomats cited by Bloomberg.
Washington has also increased economic pressure through additional sanctions, while Iran is preparing for the possibility of renewed U.S. military strikes. Trump has said an escalation of bombing after the November midterm elections remains possible, while Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has warned it would retaliate against further U.S. or Israeli attacks.
