Oman and Iran’s foreign ministers reviewed diplomatic efforts to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday and called for safety measures, according to Oman’s Foreign Ministry.

Sayyid Badr Albusaidi and Seyed Abbas Araghchi called for future agreements to be based on practical maritime safety measures and joint technical mechanisms to support international trade and energy flows, the ministry said. They said any understanding should respect state sovereignty and the legitimate interests of all parties, while helping create conditions for dialogue on issues behind the escalation.

The ministers also backed continued consultations and diplomatic efforts to strengthen regional security and stability, the statement said. The statement did not announce a timetable or say that an agreement had been reached.

The ministry said the two ministers would continue consultations, but announced no date for another meeting.
