Lawyer Mostafa Nili told ISNA that Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi received a prison term of five years and one month in absentia, alongside two-year travel and social media bans.

Nili said the judgment also calls for confiscation of all Panahi’s movable and immovable property. ISNA’s report did not identify the charges.

ISNA said Nili later sought details from the prosecutor’s unit responsible for enforcing court sentences. He told the agency a freeze on Panahi’s bank accounts came to his attention last week.

Panahi’s film It Was Just An Accident won the top prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The Straits Times recounted that Panahi was banned from making films and leaving Iran for 20 years in 2010, following his support for anti-government protests and films critical of Iran.

ISNA reported that Panahi has not been notified of a hearing date in the latest case. Nili said three cases involving the filmmaker remain pending.
