Iraq plans to place Sinjar Mountain security under federal authorities and integrate the Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS) into state institutions, a move Baghdad says supports its drive to control every weapon.

In a statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency, Sabah al-Numan, military spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, said the procedures were scheduled for Oct. 26. He said they would reorganize YBS’s ties with Iraqi security forces.

The plan would bring YBS members into Iraqi security institutions and assign Sinjar Mountain security to the relevant federal authorities, al-Numan said.

He said the measure reflects Baghdad’s effort to bring every weapon under state authority, citing Iraq’s constitutional prohibition on forming armed groups outside the official forces. Al-Numan said carrying out the plan would open a new phase in security arrangements for Sinjar district.

Anadolu Ajansı reported that YBS has links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
