Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Italy’s new protest offense targets groups of at least five people who throw objects and endanger others, detailing the government’s response to unrest in Milan.
The Cabinet approved the decree Oct. 20. Meloni said a conviction for the specified conduct could bring up to five years in prison and a fine of up to €20,000.
The Cabinet’s security package also authorizes 500 additional troops for Milan. Italy’s Defense Ministry said the soldiers were immediately available to strengthen patrols and guard sensitive sites, freeing police and Carabinieri for other duties.
ANSA reported that Article 8 of the decree provides €4.7 million for the added deployment, which would run through Dec. 31.
Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said shops were damaged during the Oct. 17-18 weekend. The Independent reported that the unrest followed demonstrations over living costs and public services.
ANSA reported that Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi planned to hold a public-security meeting in Milan on Oct. 21.
