Truck protests in southern Italy disrupted buffalo mozzarella production and deliveries, with consortium director Pier Maria Saccani estimating a €3 million loss for producers over 24 hours.

The Associated Press reported that blockades stopped buffalo milk from reaching dairies. Consortium rules give dairies 60 hours to turn the milk into mozzarella, AP reported.

France 24 said finished cheeses also failed to reach buyers while the protests were underway. The outlet described the action as a protest over diesel prices.

AP reported that producers and dairies faced losses and closures, while higher production costs had not been fully passed on to customers.

The wider stoppage has disrupted food deliveries and threatened municipal services in southern Italy, while Naples and Bari’s mayors have called for earlier talks with truckers.
