Japanese investors sold a net ¥161.6 billion in foreign long-term debt securities in the week ended Oct. 17, extending a five-week streak as the latest outflow was the smallest in that run, Ministry of Finance data show.

The five weekly outflows were ¥1.9049 trillion, ¥682.3 billion, ¥344.7 billion, ¥339.9 billion and ¥161.6 billion, in chronological order from Sept. 13-19 to Oct. 11-17. Combining the readings gives ¥3.4334 trillion in cumulative net disposals. The calculation gives the period total for the run detailed in EconoTimes’ earlier coverage of its five-week low.

Reuters separately reported that foreign investors bought ¥1.45 trillion in Japanese long-term bonds and sold ¥2.24 trillion in Japanese short-term bills during the week. In other cross-border positions, Japanese investors made net purchases of ¥128.3 billion in foreign equities and net sales of ¥156.9 billion in foreign short-term debt securities.

The U.S. Treasury Department’s daily par-yield data put the 10-year rate at 5.09% on Oct. 16, down from 5.31% on Oct. 5, then at 5.13% on Oct. 21. These are daily par yields, not intraday highs.

The Ministry’s International Transactions in Securities figures draw on reports from designated major investors, including banks, securities firms, insurers and investment trust management companies. The series does not cover all portfolio transactions in Japan’s balance-of-payments statistics. Securities trades are recorded on their execution dates and bond redemptions on their redemption dates, so weekly figures include redemptions alongside market purchases and sales.

The next weekly release, covering Oct. 18-24, is scheduled for Oct. 29.
