With Democrats projected to take House control, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is in line to become the first Black speaker and has pledged to pursue lower costs and accountability.
Jeffries spoke at House Democrats’ headquarters in Washington on election night and described the result as “America is back.” The remarks echoed his earlier pledge to press for accountability after the midterms.
House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts told NPR on Tuesday night that Democrats were on track to take control of the chamber.
At least five candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America won House seats, according to EconoTimes’ earlier report. NPR reported that those incoming lawmakers could have more influence in the speaker vote if Democrats hold a narrow majority than if they have a larger one.
