Travelers paying for JetBlue’s first checked bag within 24 hours of departure will face a $70 charge on peak dates, versus $60 off peak.

On peak dates, the first-bag fee is $70 for payment within 24 hours of departure and $55 when paid earlier, up from $49. Outside peak periods, those fees are $60 and $50, respectively; the earlier advance fee was $45.

Exemptions include JetBlue co-branded credit-card holders and passengers with elite frequent-flyer status. JetBlue said the increases are intended to offset higher fuel and operating expenses and help it maintain competitive base fares.

The airline’s third-quarter results showed a $257 million loss as fuel expense rose 61% to $868 million.
