Russell Brand will return to a London court for sentencing after his rape and sexual assault convictions, with Judge Joel Bennathan signaling a substantial prison term.
After the verdict, Bennathan told Brand he faced a “significant custodial term.” The judge denied Brand’s lawyer’s request for weekend bail, leaving the comedian in custody ahead of the hearing.
Jurors found Brand guilty of one rape count and three sexual assault counts. They acquitted him on two other rape counts and one charge of attempted indecent assault. EconoTimes previously covered the jury’s verdict.
Brand rejected the accusations and maintained that all his sexual activity was consensual.
NPR reported that the four-week trial examined seven historic charges brought by six women. The rape conviction concerned a woman who attended one of Brand’s comedy shows in 2009; the three assault convictions involved other women and incidents from 2004 to 2009 at a bar, radio station and TV studio.
Brand is due to be sentenced Monday, Nov. 9.
