Substack author Paul Krugman said the U.S. election carries stakes beyond Congress as forecasts he cited pointed to Democratic control of the House and gave Democrats about an 80% chance of taking the Senate.

In a Nov. 3 post on Substack, Krugman said he remained nervous despite that outlook, writing that “the very idea of America” was at stake. He wrote that weighing the election’s significance or offering advice to Democrats felt too much like trying to jinx its outcome.

Krugman said a simplified rendition of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” seemed apt and evoked an earlier period when the country’s future was uncertain.
