Young investors in Nigeria were urged to scrutinize commodity investment pitches at a Lagos seminar BusinessDay reported was held Oct. 22, as the securities regulator continues a monthlong investor-protection campaign.
The Lagos Commodities and Futures Exchange (LCFE) had scheduled its sixth annual financial-literacy program for Oct. 22 at its trading floor. Its notice listed secondary-school students, university students and other young people as the intended audience. BusinessDay reported that the event took place in Lagos.
BusinessDay said LCFE Head of Operations Nkechi Obi-Chidi encouraged students to promote legitimate investment opportunities and verify schemes with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The outlet also reported that SEC representative Kelechi Azubuike-Luke advised attendees to check operators’ registration through official channels and be wary of offers promising guaranteed profits or unusually high returns. It said she cautioned students against relying on investment pitches circulating on social media or recommendations from peers.
The SEC lists Oct. 5-11 as the dates for its 2026 World Investor Week activities and says investor-protection events will continue through Oct. 31. Its campaign page provides a tool for checking operators, platforms and notices against official records.
The SEC calendar lists an Abuja Smart Money Campus Tour for Oct. 27, followed by a Lagos launch on Oct. 30 and an Investor Protection Pavilion and Clinic in Lagos on Oct. 31.
