Endesa and Red Eléctrica confirmed electricity was restored across Spain’s Canary Island of La Palma Monday after a blackout disrupted service for more than 50,000 customers.

The Canary Islands government said the power system failed at 1:42 a.m. EST (06:42 UTC). At 2:30 a.m. EST (07:30 UTC), it activated a civil-protection alert to coordinate agencies and assess possible effects on essential services.

Red Eléctrica’s interim estimate put restored service at about 75% of affected customers. Endesa and the grid operator later confirmed full restoration.

Emergency officials reported rainfall totals of 62 millimeters in one hour and 138 millimeters over 12 hours in eastern La Palma. They said backup generators kept Hospital de Dolores, the General Hospital, the airport and the port operating.

Europa Press reported a transmission-line fault during the thunderstorm. The Consejería de Transición Energética y Energía del Gobierno de Canarias was coordinating with Endesa and Red Eléctrica to determine the cause.
