Lapid said U.S. midterm results had ended the chance of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leading a unity government, a political consequence he drew from the American vote, Anadolu Agency reported.
The agency said Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, a setback for President Donald Trump and Republicans. It also reported that Trump had backed Netanyahu. The link between the U.S. results and Netanyahu’s Israeli political prospects was Lapid’s assessment, Anadolu said.
Israeli parties are seeking to form a government after the inconclusive Oct. 27 election. Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Lieberman said his party would recommend Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot to form the next government and would not join a Netanyahu-led government. EconoTimes previously covered Lieberman’s recommendation of Eisenkot.
The Jerusalem Post reported that Lieberman announced the recommendation at a news conference. Anadolu Agency also reported that he rejected a minority government.
