Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Germany of effectively “declaring war” on Russia amid escalating tensions over Berlin’s claims that Moscow was behind a drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
Speaking on Sunday, Lavrov said Western allegations linking Russia to the incident represented, “by and large, the start of a real war,” according to Russian state news agency TASS.
Lavrov specifically criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his push to strengthen Germany’s military capabilities and establish the country as a leading defense power in Europe.
“All these statements by Merz about making Germany the leading military power in Europe once again – they are being put into practice. He is, in effect, declaring war on us,” Lavrov said.
His comments come days after Germany formally accused Russia of responsibility for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month, further worsening relations between Berlin and Moscow.
On September 1, the German government said its investigation had concluded that Russia was responsible for the attempted drone attack. Berlin subsequently announced several measures against Moscow in response to the incident.
Among the measures, Germany ordered the closure of a Russian consulate as well as a Russian cultural center in Berlin. The moves underscored growing concerns in Germany over what authorities view as Russian security threats and hostile activities.
Moscow has strongly rejected Germany’s allegations, describing them as unfounded. Russian officials have instead accused Berlin of planting evidence in an attempt to blame Moscow for the Leipzig airport drone incident.
The dispute adds another source of friction between Russia and Germany as European governments increase their focus on defense and security amid heightened tensions with Moscow. Lavrov’s latest remarks suggest relations between the two countries could deteriorate further as Germany maintains its accusations and Russia continues to deny involvement.
