A disputed 2019 maritime pact between Turkey and Libya drew fresh opposition from Greece and Egypt after Libya’s eastern House of Representatives ratified it this week.

Reuters reported Thursday that Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said Athens and Cairo were discussing an eastward extension of their exclusive economic zone toward Cyprus. On X, Gerapetritis said any extension would be consistent with international law and the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Gerapetritis said they opposed the ratification and would continue to follow international law and UNCLOS. The vote marked the House’s reversal of its 2020 opposition to the pact. A 2020 agreement established the two countries’ exclusive economic zone boundary in the eastern Mediterranean.
