Marygrove Hosts Teacher Workshop for Pre-K - Elementary Students with Learning Differences on April 24

Detroit, MI, April 02, 2018 -- DETROIT, MI, April 2, 2018   —  Marygrove College will host “Teaching Strategies for Pre-K - Elementary Students with Learning Differences,” a workshop for educators on Tuesday, April 24. Dr. Denise Powell, assistant professor of education at Marygrove, will lead the conversation. Light dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. and the presentation will follow at 6:30 p.m. This event is free of charge and open to the public.

“Despite the expert strategies teachers have tried since September to help their students with learning differences advance in the classroom, some students are still struggling,” said Dr. Diane Brown, IHM, director of Marygrove’s Education Department. “We want to provide these dedicated educators with innovative strategies they can try during the last six weeks of school.”

Dr. Powell said, “This interactive workshop is designed to give teachers practical, fair and flexible classroom management solutions that work for all students—especially those with learning differences.”

This event is the third in a series of ongoing Community Invested in Teaching Youth (C.I.T.Y.) events sponsored by Marygrove College. A recognized leader in teacher education, Marygrove conceived C.I.T.Y. in 2016 with the goal of helping Detroit area teachers to increase their effectiveness and their students’ success in the classroom. Dr. Denise Nicole Powell has over 40 years of experience in public education. In addition to serving as an educator and elementary school principal, she has also acted as an educational consultant, research coordinator, and principal/leadership coach. She has presented at local, state, and national conferences and holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from Michigan State University; a master’s degree in educational leadership from Marygrove College; a PhD in early childhood education from Oakland University; and state of Michigan endorsements in learning disabilities and early childhood special education.
