Taiwan’s Commercial Times reported that a Google chip project involving MediaTek may begin shipping in the first quarter of 2028 after design revisions delayed related work by an estimated three weeks.
The timetable comes as Google sells TPU systems to outside customers. Alphabet’s filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, said Google Cloud recorded TPU system sales revenue for the first time. Google also offers cloud-based access to its chips. The reported shipping window concerns the MediaTek-involved project; the existing sales were not identified as sales of TPU v9 systems.
Commercial Times cited institutional investors for its schedule. It reported that revisions to Core A, code-named Humufish, would require MediaTek to align its Core B and input/output designs with the changed component. The newspaper put the resulting delay to MediaTek’s work at about three weeks.
The investors expect an initial tape-out in January 2027, with a production-design tape-out in the second quarter of 2027, according to the report. Those dates and the first-quarter 2028 shipping window are estimates.
Separately, research firm TrendForce forecasts the use of Intel’s EMIB-T packaging technology for TPU v9. It identified substrate yield as a factor that could affect manufacturing volume and cost. The next investor call on MediaTek’s calendar is set for 3 a.m. ET (07:00 UTC) on Oct. 30.
