Mediazona’s Oct. 23 update put its named count of Russian military personnel killed in the war against Ukraine at 283,000, documenting a large toll while leaving deaths without a public record outside the tally.
Mediazona, which works with the BBC’s Russian service and volunteers, rounded the count to 283,000. The Kyiv Independent reported an exact tally of 282,993 and said 6,880 names had been added since the prior update on Oct. 9. The outlet said it could not immediately verify the precise total.
Researchers draw on material including relatives’ online posts, local news coverage and statements from regional authorities. They look for corroborating details before adding a name, Mediazona says.
The project describes the result as a named list based on public evidence, not a complete count of Russian military deaths. Mediazona said its list remains incomplete, particularly for recent months, and that deaths with no public record cannot be included.
The update also recorded 7,920 confirmed deaths among officers in Russia’s army and other security agencies. Mediazona said officers accounted for as much as 10% of deaths early in the war, compared with 2% to 3% by November 2024.
The project linked that decline to changing battlefield tactics and increased recruitment of volunteer infantry. It said volunteer infantry had casualty rates many times higher than those of their commanders.
Mediazona’s earlier accounts traced shifts in the groups bearing losses, from airborne and motorized rifle forces early in the war to volunteers later in 2022, prisoners around Bakhmut by March 2023, and volunteers again by September 2024. Its count excludes deaths among forces of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, except Russian citizens who joined voluntarily or were sent there through mobilization.
