A video shared by Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi shows her saying she opposed her husband, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, becoming prime minister. The remarks offer a personal account of a consequential moment in Indian politics.
“When my husband was asked to become Prime Minister, which I was totally against,” she said in the video. The quoted clip does not state why she opposed his taking office.
Gulf News reported that Gandhi declined the premiership after Congress and its allies won the 2004 general election. The outlet said she went on to lead Congress and was a prominent figure in the United Progressive Alliance government that followed.
According to Gulf News, Belonging: A Journey of Love looks back at Gandhi’s political career and personal history, including her childhood in Italy and marriage to Rajiv Gandhi. The outlet said it is expected to address the 1984 assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the 1991 killing of Rajiv Gandhi. Publication is scheduled for Nov. 10, 2026.
