Blockchain analytics firm Bitquery traced $48.6 million in transfers from wallets it linked to Mercado Bitcoin across 11 blockchains on Monday, Nov. 2, as customers of the Brazilian exchange remain unable to move assets during the suspension.
Bitquery priced each asset when it moved. Its timeline shows 36,042 Ethereum addresses used for customer deposits sent about $266,000 to the attacker from 7:27 a.m. to 11:56 a.m. ET (12:27-16:56 UTC). Mercado Bitcoin announced that it had contained the incident at 7:56 a.m. ET (12:56 UTC), so transfers continued for about four hours after that announcement.
The $48.6 million estimate values transfers when they occurred. Mercado Bitcoin’s current customer FAQ separately says more than $16 million has been blocked with partners’ help and that the exchange will replace affected customer assets with its own funds.
Deposits, withdrawals and trading remain suspended, following the earlier suspension of Mercado Bitcoin deposits and withdrawals. The company plans to reopen its website in read-only mode Monday, Nov. 9, so customers can view balances, statements and investments. Transfers and trading will remain unavailable until security validations are complete.
