German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said investors had pledged about €230 billion for Germany as a Berlin summit closed Oct. 20, while the government published no project allocations or spending schedule.
The Oct. 19-20 gathering was the government's first high-level investment summit, with about 200 executives and investors attending, according to its account. Merz pointed to investment plans from Amazon, NVIDIA, RWE, Schwarz Group, Blackstone, Microsoft and Sanofi. The closing statement cited Amazon’s announced €16 billion investment but gave no company-by-company breakdown of the €230 billion total or spending timetable.
ZEW's German economic sentiment reading fell 6.6 points from September to 28.1 points in October 2026, the research institute reported Oct. 20. ZEW President Achim Wambach said energy costs were restraining household outlays and capital spending.
One separately detailed corporate plan comes from Amazon. The company says its 2027 investment in Germany will exceed €16 billion, with €4.8 billion designated for an expansion of the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region. Amazon tied that regional expansion to demand for cloud and artificial intelligence services. Its wider program also includes data centers, AI infrastructure, satellite internet, logistics and Prime Video productions.
Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space signed a declaration of intent with NVIDIA on Oct. 19. It sets out cooperation on AI models for industrial uses; the government assigned no monetary value to the declaration. NVIDIA separately said it plans to invest in four German startups, but did not state individual amounts.
The government presents the summit as the start of ongoing work to draw private investment into energy, industrial AI, data centers and infrastructure, with officials arguing that investment can support employment and growth. The summit agenda also includes discussions on finance and semiconductors. EconoTimes previously covered Germany's appeal to investors through a Berlin summit.
