German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described Russia’s influence on German society as his leading concern, citing daily hybrid threats he said could destabilize the country, Anadolu Agency reported. He spoke Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the Berlin Global Dialogue.
“My biggest concern is the impact of Russia on our society,” Merz said, according to the agency.
A German government transcript of his speech lists sabotage, cyberattacks, drones and disinformation among the tactics he discussed. It says Merz warned these methods could weaken security and economic well-being while worsening divisions within society.
Anadolu Agency also reported that Merz cited suspected attacks on infrastructure and interference with internet and communications systems, which he said were occurring daily.
