Argentine President Javier Milei and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed trade, investment and shared security across the Western Hemisphere in an Oct. 16 call focused on strengthening economic ties between their countries.
The U.S. State Department said the leaders discussed opportunities for more trade and investment, along with shared prosperity and security. It said they committed to continued cooperation intended to benefit people in both countries.
Milei's office described regional stability as a way to strengthen investor confidence and help Argentina integrate more fully into global value chains. It also cited the governments' shared support for democratic institutions, free trade and private enterprise.
The call followed Milei's Oct. 15 appearance at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington. Argentina's government said he spoke to business leaders about the country's investment prospects and received an award.
Separately, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau is traveling to Paraguay and Argentina from Oct. 19 to 26 with Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Juan Pablo Segura. The State Department said Landau plans to meet officials and business leaders in Buenos Aires to discuss growth, U.S. investment and security cooperation.
The department said those meetings would build on momentum from the Sept. 23 launch of the Andes-Atlantic Corridor. Argentina's Foreign Ministry said the infrastructure initiative is intended to draw investment to Argentina and give U.S. companies opportunities to bid on projects. The ministry cited economic corridors elsewhere as models for the initiative.
