The Independent reported Oct. 19 that Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch's office would bring no criminal charges against the officer who shot 1-year-old Kohen Wiley.

Senatobia officers went to a Walmart on June 14 after a shoplifting report. Kohen was in a car with his mother, Vellesiya Wiley, and her friend when an officer fired into the vehicle. Kohen died, and his mother's friend was wounded.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said the car moved in officers' direction as they tried to stop it. In a video released days later, Wiley said the driver was leaving rather than heading toward police. She also denied that she and her friend had stolen anything from Walmart.

Ben Crump, an attorney for the family, said a preliminary independent autopsy indicated the bullet reached Kohen from the car's side. Crump cited that finding in challenging the officers' account of the vehicle's movement. The Independent reported that police reports cited diapers and baby clothes as allegedly stolen, and that neither woman had been charged with theft.
