The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said fighting in Yemen had displaced more than 268,000 people by Oct. 23, while 3,836 Yemenis reached Djibouti by sea through Oct. 17 as aid needs mounted.

About half of those Yemenis were children, IOM said. The agency also recorded 1,327 migrants crossing from Yemen to Djibouti by sea while returning toward their countries of residence.

IOM reported more than 42,000 displaced people in Aden and about 67,000 in Lahj. Families faced overcrowded shelter and difficulty obtaining water, health care and basic supplies, according to a United Nations (U.N.) summary of IOM information.

IOM said it was providing shelter, clean water, health care and protection, and requested $30 million to expand emergency assistance over six months. “The scale and speed of this displacement is leaving families in desperate need of help,” said Abdusattor Esoev, IOM’s chief of mission in Yemen.

An earlier EconoTimes report said road closures were straining Taiz hospitals’ access to fuel and medicine.
