SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said he would give one of his shares to every child in America in 2027, a pledge worth about $10.52 billion under an illustrative population and price calculation.
In an Oct. 19 post on X, Musk described the proposed recipients as “every kid in America.” He did not define who qualifies, specify a share class or explain how the shares would be delivered.
The U.S. Census Bureau estimated 72,021,348 residents under 18 as of July 1, 2025. SpaceX’s Class A shares closed at $146.03 on Oct. 16. At that price, one share for each person in the census group would be worth about $10.52 billion. Musk has not identified that group as the recipients, and the calculation does not establish the value of a gift made in 2027.
An Aug. 13 SEC filing listed Musk as beneficially owning 6,418,547,515 SpaceX shares on an as-converted Class A basis as of June 30. The filing put that holding at 48.4% of the class under its conversion and option assumptions. The total includes shares held in trusts, restricted stock and options, so it does not establish how many shares Musk could transfer under the proposed gift.
SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell and her husband made a separate pledge in July to give shares through Trump Accounts to more than 2 million children, focusing on ages 11 to 17 in lower-income areas. The Internal Revenue Service says those accounts can be established for eligible minors with Social Security numbers. Musk has not said he would use them for his pledge.
Musk’s announcement followed an Oct. 18 statement from Anthropic that it would commit 5% of its shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to shareholder approval. Musk responded by recommending that shares be distributed directly to the public.
SpaceX is scheduled to release third-quarter results after the U.S. market closes Oct. 20 and hold a webcast at 4:30 p.m. ET.
