Rare images of detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, released by Myanmar's government on Oct. 19, accompanied its announcement that she had received books and correspondence from King Charles III.

The presidential spokesperson said the delivery included two books, a sealed envelope and a diplomatic communication. The titles were Soil: The World At Our Feet and The Land Gardeners: Soil To Table.

Reuters reported that Suu Kyi, 81, has been detained since the military ousted her administration in February 2021. She was moved to house arrest in April after an election under military rule installed coup leader Min Aung Hlaing as president. Reuters said her 18-year sentence stems from convictions involving election fraud, corruption, incitement and a state secrets law. Suu Kyi denies the charges.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said one of its delegates met with Suu Kyi on Aug. 3. Reuters reported that requests for a meeting had not led to a publicly disclosed encounter with a foreign leader or envoy.
