At a Berlin Security Conference panel Wednesday, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker urged European allies to strengthen their defenses and said he did not expect the midterm election to change U.S. foreign policy.

Anadolu Agency reported that Whitaker made the remarks during the panel. “The foreign policy of the United States has not changed, and I don't expect it to change with the midterm election,” he said.

Whitaker said the challenges facing the United States and NATO remained the same. He called for a stronger Europe within the alliance and acknowledged past disagreements among members over defense burden-sharing.

He also said the Trump administration remained committed to its obligations under the Washington Treaty, including Article 5.

Europe’s role in NATO has also featured in remarks by Italian Ambassador to Türkiye Giuseppe Manzo. In an interview reported by Anadolu Agency, Manzo said Italy and Türkiye share security priorities on NATO’s eastern and southern flanks and described Türkiye as important to European security.
