The National Weather Service (NWS) declared a Flash Flood Emergency northeast of Crossroads in Mississippi's Pearl River County at 10:47 p.m. EDT Saturday (9:47 p.m. CDT), Oct. 31, after officials reported rescues.
The agency said emergency managers initially reported six to 10 inches of rain, high-water rescues and fast-moving water over multiple roads. The NWS described the threat as life-threatening and urged residents to move to higher ground. It advised people to stay off roads unless they were leaving an area at risk of flooding or were under an evacuation order.
At 1:43 a.m. EDT Sunday (12:43 a.m. CDT), the NWS extended a Flash Flood Warning and said radar indicated 10 to 17 inches of rain near Crossroads. The 10-to-17-inch figure was a radar estimate.
Pearl River County Emergency Services Director Jonathan Head told WLOX his agency was conducting two water rescues Saturday night. WLOX reported that two people were removed from vehicles and transported by ambulance, and that the Mississippi Highway Patrol closed roads in affected areas.
Earlier Saturday, the NWS Weather Prediction Center said storms moving slowly through the county could produce rainfall at 2.5 inches an hour, with flash flooding possible.
